“Who are the people in your neighbourhood, the people that you meet each day?” Does anyone else remember this Sesame Street classic? Please don’t say it’s just us!
The Professional Development Committee asked this question about the members on Cranberry Street, and Myth vs. Fact was born. One of our key goals this year is to #LevelUp member engagement and public speaking, and this initiative was the perfect way for members to do just that by addressing key misconceptions about their professions.
At our club meeting on August 13, 2019 four lawyers and an actuary walked into a club… (ha!)
Prospective Member Tesonna Alleyne gave an action-packed presentation on Actuarial Science. She encouraged attendees to participate in a game called “Who You Gonna Call?” [apparently not the Ghostbusters] to demonstrate the chameleon-like nature of being an Actuary, a profession which can have a place in varied and diverse fields to predict “current solutions to future problems”.
This was followed by a presentation from Vice-President Zahir Jackson, Secretary Danielle Donawa and Director of Public Relations Haylee Shaw who shared their experiences as Lawyers. We were also happy to welcome Courtnay Patterson, Director of Professional Development of the Rotaract Club of Kingston, and an Attorney-at-Law, who joined our Club’s “Legal Department” for this session.
We are so grateful to all of our presenters who were brave enough to start the ball rolling and we cannot wait to see what the Professional Development Committee comes up with for the next installment!
