There’s supposed to be no ‘I’ in team, but given the number of ‘I’s’ that volunteered for the last edition of the Breaking Bread Takeover, that notion can certainly be challenged.
On Saturday Sept. 5, 2020 the Rotaract Club of Barbados hosted its 5th Takeover of the ‘Breaking Bread, Making Bread’ initiative, just outside of the Daphne Joseph Hackett Theatre in Queens Park. By 6 a.m., all teams were in place and rearing to go. At approximately 6:05 a.m. there was the customary prayer of thanksgiving which was directly followed by the serving of food and distribution of clothing and books. When the dust was settled, we were able to provide hearty meals for over 100 persons, many of whom also took advantage of the clothes and books on hand.
Some may say that it was a resounding success but that would be a gross understatement. In fact, it was actually beyond anything I could have imagined. Months in advance persons were queuing up to be on the Breaking Bread train, and following the official announcement, the number of interested persons grew so much that we were overbooked! I had never experienced anything like it. Who knew that this event would garner such an overwhelming response? Who knew that seeing such elation and content on the faces of those in need would be so heartening?
The entire club has earned commendation, not only for the donations and support, but for the overall execution of the project. From the setup and serving of food, to the distribution of clothing and books, all team members were fantastic. Also outstanding was the cook team, led by Director Mario Murray, whose attention to detail in the kitchen is bar none. Special mention also goes to those who were on hand to sort the clothing beforehand to simplify the distribution process on the day. All in all, it was a true reflection of service of above self. It is clear that we have undoubtedly ‘levelled up’ and continue to display our ‘passion in action’!
